Cretaceous Project 200, Volume 1: The Cretaceous World.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786206015 Year: 2025 Price: GBP 170
Author: M.B. Hart
A b s t r a c t

The Cretaceous was first mentioned in the legend of a geological map, largely centred on France, published in 1822 by Jean Baptiste Julien d’Omalius d’Halloy. Two hundred years of research have demonstrated that the Cretaceous records some of the highest sea levels, atmospheric temperatures and extreme events in Earth history. It was also a time of significant palaeogeographical changes and continental fragmentation. This volume draws together a collection of papers that demonstrate these particularly Cretaceous events of warm climates, sea-level change and the impact of major volcanic events on the fauna and flora of the time. Geochemical and stable isotope data are used to interpret these changing environments and their impact on the Cretaceous ecosystem. The volume closes with a description of the recent drilling of the Chicxulub bolide impact site.

This volume draws together a collection of papers from an exceptionally wide geographical area that reflects the varied geological features of Cretaceous strata and the enclosed faunas and floras. There are geological accounts of areas from the Arctic to the Antarctic Peninsula, onshore and offshore environments, as well as some terrestrial environments with newly described floras and faunas. The application of stable isotope geochemistry to stratigraphical problems, and the identification of cyclostratigraphy, features quite prominently in many of the areas described.

Sedimentary Dynamics in the Albertine Rift Valley, Equatorial East Africa.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786206879 Year: 2025 Price: GBP 130
Author: C.J. Nicholas
A b s t r a c t

The Albertine Rift Valley forms the northern sector of the Western Arm of the East African Rift System (EARS) and is one of the best examples of active early continental rifting in the world today. This Memoir draws together a variety of topics, or themes, ranging from structural geomorphology, to hot springs with their associated tufa-travertines, modern-day sedimentary depositional environments and examples in rift-fill outcrop, to ways of establishing a chronostratigraphic framework that correlates with global glacial–interglacial climatic cyclicity since the Pliocene. It is based on a series of original geological field surveys, undertaken for petroleum exploration companies and Government agencies over an eight-year period. These surveys, until now, have remained piecemeal views of the Lake Edward and Lake Albert basins, but here they are drawn together to provide a holistic narrative for the first time.

Alkaline Rocks: Economic and Geodynamic Significance through Geological Time.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786206275 Year: 2025 Price: GBP 145
Author: R. Pandey
A b s t r a c t

Alkaline igneous rocks have a relative excess of alkalis over silica. Most are silica-undersaturated and contain normative nepheline and primary feldspathoids. Although alkaline rocks are very rare, their diverse mineralogical and chemical composition accounts for a plethora of igneous rock names. They are recorded in continental, post-collisional and island-arc settings, as well as along rift zones.

Alkaline rocks commonly include a wide variety of rocks, including alkali basalts, tephrites, phonolites, trachytes and their intrusive equivalents, lamprophyres, and carbonatites. Their study significantly contributes to the interpretation of mantle evolution and geodynamic settings of ancient terranes. Additionally, alkaline rocks may host important precious- and rare-metal mineralization.

The Impacts of Igneous Systems on Sedimentary Basins and their Energy Resources.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786206169 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 140
Author: B. Kilhams
A b s t r a c t

Many sedimentary basins worldwide contain extrusive and intrusive igneous rock sequences, and these rocks and associated magmatic processes can exert profound influences on a diverse range of basin processes and elements, including multiscale structural and tectonic development, heat flow, transport of hydrocarbons and other basinal fluids, and the hydraulic properties and integrity of reservoir and sealing units. Recent years have witnessed increased focus on improved understanding of igneous processes in basins to aid hydrocarbon exploration and development projects, and there is growing interest in the multifaceted role that igneous sequences in basins may play in the energy transition, for example as components of carbon capture and storage projects, and sources of geothermal energy, natural hydrogen and helium. This volume showcases state-of-the-art research from both academia and industry, drawing on global examples and addressing reservoir-to-plate scales, providing critical new data, knowledge and technological capabilities that highlight the opportunities, complexities and potential pitfalls associated with unlocking the energy resources of sedimentary basins impacted by igneous processes.

Characterization, Prediction and Modelling of the Crustal Present Day In-Situ Stresses.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786206145 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 110
Author: C. Massiot
A b s t r a c t

Geomechanics has a marked impact on the safe and sustainable use of the subsurface. Along with an ongoing demand for hydrocarbon resources there is also a growing emphasis on sustainable subsurface exploitation and development, storage of carbon, hydrogen, energy and (radioactive) waste, as well as sustainable geothermal resource utilization. Such activities are accompanied by an ever-increasing need for higher resolution, fit-for-purpose solutions, workflows and approaches to constrain present-day subsurface stresses and minimize associated uncertainties. Building high fidelity geomechanical-numerical models provides critical input and understanding for diverse engineering designs and construction as well as geoscience applications. Such models greatly contribute towards uncertainty reduction, risk management and risk mitigation during the operational life of a given subsurface development and associated infrastructures (both on and below the surface). This Special Publication contains contributions detailing the latest efforts and perspectives in present-day in-situ stress characterization, prediction and modelling from the borehole to plate-tectonic scale. There is particular emphasis on the uncertainties that are often associated with data and models.

Geology's Significant Sites and their Contributions to Geoheritage.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786206008 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 100
Author: R. M. Clary
A b s t r a c t

The contributions in this book explore several geologically significant sites and, in doing so, acknowledge and explore not just the geological exposures themselves, but also the people and issues that are fundamentally intertwined with the history of our science and its impact on our society. Through selective examples of outcrops and locales integral to the history of geology, we explore the evolution of modern geology, as well as the geodiversity and geoheritage of our planet. While the volume is far from comprehensive, the chapters contained herein detail a range for geoheritage value, scale of geoheritage sites and potential for geoheritage opportunities that will promote a broader, richer understanding of the complexity of the geoheritage of Earth. Importantly, many chapters offer a cautionary tale of sites almost lost to posterity and submit their take-away lessons for community mobilization towards geoheritage site protection.

Supercontinents, Orogenesis and Magmatism.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205995 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 180
Author: R.D. Nance
A b s t r a c t

This volume is a tribute to the career of J. Brendan Murphy and features papers by over 100 authors from countries all over the world: a testament to the high-profile and far-reaching influence of Brendan’s work. The topics covered fall into three broad categories that encompass Brendan’s main fields of influence: (1) supercontinents and the supercontinent cycle, including reconstructions and modelling; (2) orogenesis and terranes, with a focus on the Appalachian–Variscan and Central Asian orogenic belts and the oceans with which they are associated; and (2) magmatism and magmatic processes, centring on the geochemistry and isotopic compositions of magmas in arc and rift setting. Like Brendan’s own research, the scope of the papers spans the globe and ranges from strongly field-based studies to conceptual analyses. All of the articles, however, are focused on unravelling some critical aspect of geology or aimed at clarifying some crucial geological process. Hence, they also share a theme common to Brendan’s many contributions in emphasizing the importance of process-oriented research.

Geological Mapping of Our World and Others.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205988 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 130
Author: R.W.H. Butler
A b s t r a c t

Map-making is a fundamental tool for developing geological knowledge. It involves data collection and interpretation and has its roots in the earliest discoveries in Earth science. It is the starting point for stratigraphic and structural interpretations, metamorphic facies, geochronology and modelling studies – and underpins civil engineering. From the beginning, geological mapping rapidly evolved into far more than being a simple spatial catalogue of observable rock types and landforms on the Earth’s land-surface: deductive reasoning allows this knowledge to infer subsurface Earth structure. However, the same approaches have also been down-scaled to deduce processes on the grain-scale; or up-scaled to look out to extraterrestrial objects. This Special Publication draws together these strands, crossing geoscience disciplines and observation scales to celebrate geological mapping, its historical importance and future directions, and its use in applied geology together with developing knowledge of Earth and planetary evolution and processes.

Meandering Streamflows: Patterns and Processes across Landscapes and Scales.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205971 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 90
Author: A. Finotello
A b s t r a c t

Meandering patterns shaped by fluid flows are found over a broad range of landscapes, from bedrock channels to rivers and estuaries, deep-marine environments, supraglacial streams and other planets such as Mars and Venus. During the last six decades, meanders have been widely investigated by researchers from different fields, such as fluid mechanics, geomorphology, ecology, civil- and petroleum engineering, and geology. This volume seeks to push the science of meandering forward by bringing together insights gained from field, laboratory and numerical investigations of meandering streams found in distinct environmental and geological contexts. The authors pay particular attention to the interactions between autogenic and allogenic processes that affect meander kinematics and the resulting morphology, sedimentology and stratigraphic architecture. The findings presented in this volume contribute to a better understanding of stream meandering in diverse settings, with broad implications for stream and wetland restoration, land management, infrastructure design, oil exploration and production, carbon sequestration, hazard mitigation and planetary palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.

The Triassic and Jurassic of the Junggar Basin, China: Advances in Palaeontology and Environments.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205957 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 120
Author: Jingeng Sha
A b s t r a c t

This book presents a compilation of recent scientific discoveries in the field of Earth sciences from Mesozoic rocks of the Junggar Basin, China. The Triassic and Jurassic strata of this basin are particularly important because they were deposited in a continental environment inside, or close to, the Arctic Circle. The successions of the Junggar Basin therefore provide a rare snapshot of a high-latitude seasonal continental ecosystem, at a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The research papers within this volume cover a range of topics, spanning the fields of palaeontology, palaeogeography, sedimentology and geochemistry, and include studies from episodes of marked environmental perturbation, including the end-Triassic mass extinction (c. 201 Ma) and the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (c. 183 Ma). The scientific advances documented here contribute to the understanding of Mesozoic high-latitude continental environments, and are expected to lead to follow-up studies, facilitating further interdisciplinary collaborations in the future.

The Bowland Shale Formation, UK: Processes and Resources.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205902 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 120
Author: J.F. Emmings
A b s t r a c t

This volume showcases recent geological, geophysical and geochemical research on the Carboniferous Bowland Shale Formation. The volume focuses on the key Carboniferous basins in the Midlands, northern England and North Wales. The Bowland Shale is perhaps the most controversial black shale unit in the UK. In the mid-2000s, attention turned to the Bowland Shale as a target for unconventional hydrocarbon exploration in the UK following success in the USA. This placed the Bowland Shale at the centre of a series of interconnected controversies and debates from the local to national scale. The geological credibility of the purported shale gas resource in the UK was – and continues to be – highly contentious. This volume contributes to a more updated view of the Bowland Shale, covering topics such as sedimentary, geochemical and physical properties and processes, basin-forming events, hydrocarbon prospectivity, mineralization and heat and fluid flow in the subsurface. The volume also includes a field guide to some of the key localities in the UK.

Seismic Geomorphology: Subsurface Analyses, Data Integration and Palaeoenvironment Reconstruction.(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205728 Year: 2024 Price: GBP 110
Author: A.M.W. Newton
A b s t r a c t

Since the last Special Publication on seismic geomorphology, the application of seismic data has grown substantially, revolutionizing our understanding of basin evolution in the process. The papers collected here are from a range of different environments, consisting of glacial, fluvial, volcanic, deltaic and slope settings. This work provides insight into the direction of travel for seismic geomorphological analyses and how the science has evolved since 2007. New methods of data collection, processing, visualization, and the integration of new types of datasets, help to maximize the palaeoenvironmental knowledge that can be derived from such studies. Many of these studies integrate different methods and datasets, such as machine learning and borehole petrophysics, or even combine (re)assessments of newly released legacy data to explore subsurface characteristics at scales never observed before. This provides significant new knowledge on not just palaeoenvironments, but also what generates seismic reflectivity in the subsurface. The study of seismic geomorphology remains in its infancy and much exciting research potential is yet to be realized.

Conservation Palaeobiology of Marine Ecosystems(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205773 Year: 2023 Price: GBP 110.00
Author: R. Nawrot
A b s t r a c t

Conservation palaeobiology tracks the history of ecosystems based on the fossil record to guide conservation decisions and contribute to the theoretical foundations of conservation biology. The accelerating pace of global change requires better understanding of the long-term resilience and adaptive capacities of ecosystems. Fossil assemblages in outcrops and cores, together with surface accumulations of skeletal remains, represent unique archives of past ecosystem dynamics and baseline community states prior to anthropogenic impacts. However, as biological data retrieved from fossil and death assemblages cannot be treated in isolation, conservation palaeobiology integrates palaeontological and geological tools to account for the nature of the stratigraphic record. This volume brings together studies that demonstrate how combining marine palaeoecological records with other types of geohistorical data (taphonomic, sedimentological, geochronological, geochemical) can inform biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. The papers highlight novel approaches and challenges in applying geohistorical data to conservation problems, discuss the limitations imposed by time averaging, and offer both deep- and near-time perspectives on conservation palaeobiology of marine ecosystems.

Ichnology in Shallow-marine and Transitional Environments(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205681 Year: 2023 Price: GBP 100.00
Author: C. Console-Gonella
A b s t r a c t

The ichnology of shallow-marine to transitional environments is a key field of study with respect to understanding the variability of environmental parameters from inshore marginal-marine settings to the offshore transition zone. Over the last decades ichnology has evolved from being a tool to determine bathymetry, becoming the standard palaeoenvironmental methodology by which trace fossils can be used to inform sedimentary facies models. In particular, the analysis of mixed assemblages of invertebrate and vertebrate trace fossils allows detailed palaeoenvironmental and facies analysis. This volume focuses on the ichnological record of shallow-marine to transitional environments through the geological record, in addition to modern ones through neoichnology.

Volcanic Processes in the Sedimentary Record: when Volcanoes meet the Environment(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781786205667 Year: 2023 Price: GBP 190.00
Author: A. Di Capua
A b s t r a c t

Volcanoes and sedimentary systems are linked by a strong relationship. The ascent and eruption of magma liberates large volumes of material, through a variety of mechanisms, to the surrounding environment, with subsequent sediment input and transport influencing the evolution of that environment. This connection between volcanism and adjacent sedimentary systems has long attracted the attention of geologists, giving rise to an increasing body of academic research over the past three decades. Volcanic Processes in the Sedimentary Record: When Volcanoes Meet the Environment collects innovative works exploring how volcanoes and sedimentary systems interact, moving from the processes directly associated with eruptive behaviour, to the most distal sedimentary offshoots, where volcanogenic particles are accumulated during or after volcanic activity. In doing this, different volcanic and environmental settings are explored, travelling through space and time, showing how volcaniclastic detritus is produced and dispersed by volcanic, volcano-sedimentary and sedimentary mechanisms, via processes affecting development of volcanic edifices themselves through to the most distal depocentres.
