Hypertension is described as the "silent killer" often showing no distinct symptoms or warning signs. The condition is estimated to affect 1.13 billion people across the globe with two-thirds in low/middle-income countries. This book presents research-backed data as to the trend in hypertension in children and adolescents along with associated factors such as sleep and even the impact of seasons! Another USP of this book is the connection between COVID-19 infection and hypertension. Overall, this book presents the current scenario of hypertension along with new advances and current gaps to help us to tackle the "silent killer".

Pulmonary hypertension is a fatal lung and heart disease. It is characterized by shortness of breath, fatigue and fainting. It is exacerbated by an increase of the pressure in the lung vasculature through exercise, leading to progressive worsening of hemodynamics, right ventricular hypertrophy, right heart insufficiency and finally right heart failure. This book focuses on pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare and progressive subgroup of pulmonary hypertension, which is today incurable and terminally fatal. Classification of pulmonary arterial hypertension, its pathology, and strategies for future therapy will be of interest both to those suffering from the disease and those who take care of patients. This volume will also engage physicians and other scientists contributing to an understanding of the pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension and attempting to extend life of humans with pulmonary arterial hypertension by developing causal and curative therapies.

This publication gives a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding circulating biomarkers in cardiovascular disease (CVD), a field which has a long history of using biomarkers for risk stratification. The blood lipid profile, including cholesterol fractions, was one of the first biomarkers to be established as a risk factor for CVD. The main focus of this work is the use of biomarkers in the risk stratification of healthy individuals and the early detection of subclinical disease. Subjects covered include: statistical approaches to evaluating the additional predictive value of new biomarkers; lipid metabolism, epidemiological data and the role of triglycerides and the apolipoprotein B–A-I ratio in cardiovascular disease; the role of inflammatory biomarkers in cardiovascular disease; a summary of current knowledge regarding natriuretic peptides and their use for risk prediction in the general population; a review of other biomarkers from the cardiomyocyte; the role of some of the most promising obesity biomarkers in cardiovascular epidemiology; the use of biomarkers for prognostication in patients with prevalent disease: and combining biomarkers from different pathways for increased predictive and prognostic capability.

SM35-351 Cardiovascular Biology: Endothelial Cell in Health and Hypertension.(文景書局)

This volume has a focus on Vascular Endothelium, NO and Hypertension and is a continuum of the volumes on Mechanobiology of Cartilage and Chondrocyte. Indeed, vascular endothelial plays a significant role in regulating blood flow, and endothelial cells (EC) have highly active metabolic functions. They generate vasoactive mediators like prostacyclin, nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin (ET-1). Endothelial cells also synthesize various proteins like von Willebrand’s factor, growth factors, and tissue plasminogen activators. They have also enzymes that inactivate bradykinin and convert angiotensin I into angiotension II (a vasopressor agent). In other respects it is now well-known that mechanical forces and stretch can modulate EC functions by activating mechano-sensors, signalling pathways, genes and protein expressions. This mechanical approach leads to a better knowledge of vascular remodelling observed in many pathologies. These different aspects are all covered in this volume.

During the last decades progress has been made in the treatment of patients who survived myocardial infarction. Nevertheless, patients who survive an acute myocardial infarction are at high risk, with life expectancy half that of their peers who have not experienced similar events, and with increased risk for subsequent cardiovascular events and death. The risk of sudden death increases with severity of systolic dysfunction after myocardial infarction. In recent years, it has become clear that in addition to risk factors such as overweight, lack of exercise, smoking, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, psychosocial factors play a key role for prognosis in patients with myocardial infarction. Therefore, there is high medical need for drugs which lower the incidence of sudden death and have an effect on other risk factors such as depression. OMACORR, a pharmaceutical preparation of highly purified and concentrated O-3 polyunsaturated acids, may present such a drug. It lowers the incidence of sudden death in patients with myocardial infarction and decreases depression. This publication focuses on the effect of O-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on different risk factors in patients with cardiovascular disease. In addition, aspects of prevention of cardiovascular disease, risk factors and pharmacokinetics of O-3 fatty acids ethyl esters are considered.

Echo Made Easy. (With CD-ROM)(文景書局)

ISBN: 9781905740680 Year: 2007 Editon: 2 Price: GBP 18.99
Author: Luthra, Atul

Ultrasound has revolutionised clinical practice by providing the fifth dimension to physical examination after inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. Echocardiography is the application of ultrasound for examining the heart. It is a practical, widely available, cost effective and non-invasive means of diagnosis.

This the 2rd edition of Echo Made Easy has been greatly improved - the text has been changed into bullet-point format to improve readability and recall. The illustrations and figures have been redrawn and colour-flow maps are now depicted in their true colours as they appear on the screen during echocardiography. In addition, an entire new chapter on Colour-Doppler Echo has been incorporated and is supported by coloured illustrations.

The book begins with the basic principles of ultrasound and Doppler and the clinical applications of various echo-modalities. This is followed by an account of different echo-windows and normal echo-views with due emphasis being laid on pitfalls in diagnosis, differentiation between seemingly similar findings, their causation and their clinical relevance.

This book is particularly intended for students of cardiology as well as keen clinicians wanting to know more about echocardiography .
