Recent political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia have prompted scholars from several disciplines to research the singularity of this region and of the territories of the old Crown of Aragon. Against the backdrop of the pro-independence movement, those in favor and against have insisted on the particularity or commonality of Catalonia and the Paisos Catalans (Catalan-speaking areas) within the Spanish State. From the Catalan point of view, their singularity is not sufficiently recognized, and respect for their institutions and their autonomy is at stake to the point that many prefer to secede from Spain. Singularity or its absence play a relevant role in the construction of identity, which seems to be key in understanding many Catalans' attitudes towards the central government, a fluid concept that allows for a variety of interpretations.

History of Catalonia and Its Implications for Contemporary Nationalism and Cultural Conflict is a critical reference book that centers around the topic of Catalan cultural and linguistic identity. With input from renowned scholars in several fields, the chapters explore the issue of Catalan identity from a variety of perspectives. While highlighting the legal and historical component to identity and also sociolinguistics and political linguistics, this book is ideally intended for scholars in the fields of Hispanic studies, history, linguistics, political science, and literary studies as well as practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in contemporary politics and the political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia.

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:
•Catalan Culture
•Catalan Identity
•Catalan Sociolinguistics

Science is one of the main features of the contemporary world, and shapes our lives to an extent that has no precedents in history. Yet science as we know it today is the outcome of contingent social processes, and its global success is far from self-explanatory. How did it happen? How did science emerge in history and became the most authoritative source of knowledge available in late modern societies? This set of volumes addresses these crucial questions through a selection of exemplary publications spanning antiquity to the present day. The reader will find an effective survey of the best scholarship in this rapidly growing field, and a map of the main revolutions as well as the long-term continuities that have characterized our understanding the world and our attempts to control it. The collection brings together areas of inquiry that have become increasingly distant and specialized, such as the history of antique science or Cold War studies, within broader narratives of the making of the modern world. They also reassess the traditional assumption of the exclusively Greek and Western origins of modern science, situating relevant knowledge, practices, and artefacts within the global networks that sustained them: in ancient as well as in modern times. The gathered materials address key historiographical issues, such as the relationship between science, magic, and religion; the role of science in nation-building processes; and the relationship between science and technology.

On December 13, 1937, the Japanese army captured Nanjing and went on to wantonly massacre disarmed Chinese soldiers and defenseless civilians in flagrant violation of international conventions. The Nanjing Massacre forms one of the darkest chapters in 20th-century world history.

Researching this major historical event requires scholars worldwide to collect a variety of primary source material in different languages. Compiled by a group of historians from about ten universities and research institutions based in China and abroad, Human Memory: Solid Evidence of The Nanjing Massacre represents a major effort in this regard. Consisting of textual and pictorial evidence reproduced from major archives and libraries around the world, the book falls into four parts—Chinese, Japanese, English, and other Western languages. The book covers material created by victims, perpetrators, and important third parties in a diversity of formats: diaries, petitions, investigation reports, news articles, tribunal documents, and photographs. To help readers to better understand the wide range of evidence, the editors have provided very useful annotations for each document or photograph. Without a doubt, this publication holds some of the most vivid and sobering scenes in humanity’s collective memory.

China's Path Toward National Rejuvenation: Review and Reflections presents the tortuous journey the Chinese nation has gone through in pursuing and achieving the socio-political ideal of national rejuvenation for more than 100 years since the first Opium War (1840-1842). Beginning with a critical account of the late-Qing historical events such as the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, the Westernization Movement, the Hundred Days' Reform of 1898, and the Revolution of 1911, it goes on to focus on how the Communist Party of China (CPC), through integrating the theory of Marxism with the actual conditions and concrete practices in China, eventually led the Chinese people to win the victory in the New Democratic Revolution (1919-1949). The founding of the People's Republic ushered in a new era of building socialism with Chinese characteristics, as aptly represented by the country's reform and opening up program undertaken since 1978.

Divided into four parts, the book examines the entire historical process of and reveals the basic patterns behind such a huge endeavor and achievement of the Chinese nation, and also reflects upon the experiences and lessons learned in the course of pursuing national rejuvenation.

KEY FEATURES
- Documents China's path toward national rejuvenation and the lessons learned.
- Allows international readers to better understand China's reemergence as an international power through the lens of an insider.
- Covers various major events in modern Chinese history, including the two Opium Wars, the Revolution of 1911, and the epochal reform and opening up since 1978.

Addressing the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of a rapidly growing and ever more complex corpus of literature, Military History is a new title from Routledge’s Critical Concepts in Military, Strategic, and Security Studies series. Edited by Jeremy Black (‘the most prolific historical scholar of our age’), it is a four-volume collection which brings together the very best scholarship in a one-stop ‘mini library’ of major works.

Black avers that military history is increasingly seen as a global enterprise and Eurocentric/Western perspectives and paradigms often now appear questionable, if not redundant. Moreover, a teleology of warfare leading towards the total warfare of the twentieth century—the two world wars and the Cold War—appears far less convincing, he says, in light of developments since 1990. This kind of re-examination of long-held assumptions about military history has guided the selection of materials, which are organized chronologically, but with abundant cross-referencing to enable users to pursue thematic approaches. The focus is on major works published since 1990, first to centre on current research, questions, and perspectives and, secondly, because earlier literature can be followed through these pieces.

Military History is fully indexed and includes a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. It is an essential reference work and is destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital research and pedagogic resource.

The history of imperialism in China is a complex, contentious history. In modern times, China’s experience with imperialism has entailed two parallel stories during the 19th and 20th centuries—stories that are different in their geographic location, in their motivations, and in their outcomes. The facet of imperialism that has received the most attention is that of aggression against China by capitalist nations, culminating in the Japanese invasion of the 1930s. This story evolved in a low-key way before the 19th century, but then entered a more aggressive phase with military action by the British in the First Opium War (1839-1842). Both economic issues and cultural issues have received attention in this story, and are thoroughly explored in two volumes of this Major Work.

The simultaneous story of Qing Imperialism in Eurasia (stretching from Tibet through Central Asia and Mongolia around to Korea), as explored in the third volume, entailed a multilateral rivalry, with China, Great Britain, Russia, and Japan jockeying for position. Again, the origins lay well before the 19th century, and again significant military action was important—in this case, led primarily by the Han (Chinese) official Zuo Zongtang on behalf of the Qing (Manchu) dynasty. An important aspect of this second story is that the territories in dispute were inhabited by non-Han peoples. For the most part, Chinese writings do not treat this episode as an example of imperialism, much as American history books do not generally treat the incorporation of the swath of Mexican territory from Texas to California into the United States as an act of imperialism. This reference work gathers together in one place a multitude of academic sources on the history of imperialism and China, providing an essential overview of the many sides of the topic.

With over half the world’s population now living in cities, urbanization is one of the defining features of the contemporary world, and urban history – the study of the processes and consequences of urbanization – is one of the most dynamic fields of modern and contemporary history. But the dynamism of urban history is not confined to the modern era and the study of urban societies in the less recent past equally represents a highly fertile field of scholarship.

This collection will provide an expert overview of the field of urban history and a representative synthesis of past and current scholarship in urban history. The articles selected will explore key debates and conceptual issues in urban history from a global perspective highlighting the benefits of comparative historical research and of interdisciplinary approaches drawn from the humanities and social sciences . The recent expansion of global history and transnational perspectives in historical research is particularly suited to the study of urban history, given the importance of cities as nodal points in the networks of global exchange and communication and this volume. The collection will also adopt a deliberately broad chronological span from antiquity to the twentieth century in order to facilitate diachronic comparisons and to emphasize the continuities, as well as discontinuities in urban history. The volumes differ from the several ‘urban studies’ readers that are already available on the market in that the long term historical perspective is central to their conception. They will address theories of urbanization and methodological and conceptual issues of urban history, including questions of definition, as well as covering wider thematic issues that are representative of the different disciplinary approaches that have influenced urban history and which reflect the wider questions that urban historians have, historically, sought to address.

VA03-220 The History of Nursing, 4-Vols/Set.(文景書局)

The History of Nursing is a complex, shifting discipline engaged in an ongoing search for identity and purpose. If its earliest works were celebratory narratives of ‘great deeds’ and ‘influential nurses’, dominated by biographies of Florence Nightingale and tropes of imperial womanhood, then from at least the 1970s, academics—drawn mainly from Women’s History and Nursing—have argued for a move from such uncritical stances and towards more analytical and nuanced approaches. Lately, Nursing History has been characterized by the ‘cultural turn’, with a shift in focus from class, gender, and race, to the study of practices, ideologies, and life-worlds. Characterized by an emphasis on history ‘from below’, it aims to recapture the experiences of both nurses and patients, and to recover voices that never found their way into mainstream histories of healthcare or society.

Now, a new title from Routledge’s Major Themes in Health and Social Welfare series meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of this evolution. Edited by the Director of the UK Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Manchester, The History of Nursing offers both a historiographical overview of disciplinary trends and a definitive omnibus of classic scholarship and rigorous research studies. Avoiding material which is tendentious, superficial, and otiose, it will be welcomed as an ‘uber-anthology’of the most significant and valuable major works in the History of Nursing.

Primarily aimed at undergraduates, America In The World will answer the needs of students while satisfying the general reader's increasing curiosity about America's role on the world scene; the impact of U.S. policies not only nationally, on the domestic agenda, but globally; and the reactions of the world's nations to America's rise, 1776 to the present. The set includes key figures from John Adams and the Marquis de Lafayette to Bob Dylan and Barack Obama, and also covers organizations like IBM and the RAND Corporation, the American Colonization Society and the Red Cross, along with topics exploring social and cultural themes, such as Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West, Captain America, Americanization, Exceptionalism, and the Lost Generation. The emphasis on global perspectives brings fresh insights to such domestic topics as the Texas Republic, Wounded Knee, the Department of Homeland Security, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The entry on King, for example, answers the following questions: how did he develop and articulate a global vision of the struggle against colonialism and imperialism during his years of fight against segregation in America? What role did he play in the fight against Apartheid in South Africa? How was King influenced by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi? Referred to in the academic world as "transnational history," the content in our volumes introduces an increasingly popular approach to teaching US history in the context of the world at large.

Histories of Everyday Life In Totalitarian Regimes is a new set in St. James Press’s award-winning Literature of Society series. It explores daily life in such totalitarian dictatorships as Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union, China under Mao, and North Korea. Two-thirds of the publication (200 entries) focus on compelling personal histories detailing the experiences of individuals in these regimes. The personal experiences are conveyed in such first-hand accounts as memoirs, autobiographies, diaries, and letters. An additional 100 entries interwoven throughout the three volumes further elucidate daily life in totalitarian regimes by exploring works of fiction dedicated to the topic. Perspectives from both the rulers and the ruled, from different age groups and occupations, are represented to give an understanding of the social, cultural, political, and economic conditions. The scholarly advisory board brings multiple disciplines, including history, literature, European and Asian languages, to assure thorough treatment that goes beyond the Cold War perspective during which the term "totalitarian" came into vogue. The attractive design features some 250 images and 50 maps and graphics. In addition to college students and the general public, the set has much to offer ninth through twelfth grade high school teachers and students in the core curriculum. The English Language Arts Standards (for History/Social Studies and Reading: Literature) emphasize analysis of primary and secondary sources and fictional works, all three of which Histories of Everyday Life in Totalitarian Regimes covers.

Complementing those earlier collections, this new four-volume set demonstrates spiritualism’s hugely significant—but hitherto often neglected—contemporary engagement with questions of race, eugenics, and the body, and with anti-spiritualist critique. Moreover, as spiritualism is commonly identified as a predominantly Victorian—and western—phenomenon, little has been done better to understand spiritualism in its global and temporal contexts. Furthermore, while numerous studies of spiritualism in canonical Victorian literature exist, the movement’s own rich literary output and its relationship with the non-spiritualist gothic remain underexplored. Indeed, despite the explosion of scholarly interest in modern spiritualism across a wide range of disciplines, almost none of the movement’s key philosophical, literary, political, and medical texts are currently in print.

The learned editors of this collection have remedied these imbalances and Spiritualism, 1840–1930 offers access to a wide range of materials from an important period in spiritualism’s history, including previously unpublished material relating to Arthur Conan Doyle’s investment in spiritualism and transcriptions of the Henri Louis Rey seances in New Orleans (the only entirely African-American nineteenth-century spiritualist circle whose records have been preserved). The collection focuses on key topics and situates inaccessible primary sources alongside better-known works to posit their importance in the development of spiritualism as a social, cultural, and transatlantic phenomenon.

Over the past decades, the field has seen the publication of some excellent in-depth studies on aspects of Islamic history 600–1000 CE, and has also undergone a revision of its own boundaries. Some studies have thus placed the origins of Islam in the wider context of Late Antiquity, and argued for an examination of the development of Islam as a religion and civilization in a broader monotheistic and Mediterranean context.

Moreover, the historiographic debates of the 1970s are far from resolved: in the seventies a new critical approach to the study of early Islamic history emerged, often described as the sceptical or revisionist approach. Questioning the reliability of the Muslim tradition about Islamic origins, the ‘revisionists’ also at times suggested that it is impossible to recover any kernel of historical truth (what ‘actually happened’). Their assumptions and findings have been (and continue to be) criticized in numerous works, though not often in sustained or comprehensive manners. More recently, the field has witnessed a return to more ‘conventional’ approaches, where attempts are made to recover and reconstruct aspects of early Islamic history by analysis of the transmission history of hadith traditions and their chains of narrators.

An understanding of the sources and the historiography thus remains pivotal to discussions of early Islamic history. This important issue is addressed particularly in the first volume, and in a thorough introduction which draws together the main themes and developments of the period. Early Years of Islam provides excellent reference work and very useful teaching material for a number of different university level courses, in subjects including History, Area Studies, Religious Studies, and Islamic Studies.

Serious research in and around the history—and contemporary reality—of slavery is very wide-ranging, and flourishes as never before. This new four-volume collection from Routledge’s acclaimed series, Critical Concepts in Historical Studies, meets the need for a reference work to help users make sense of the subject’s vast and dispersed literature, and the continuing explosion in research output.

Edited by two of the leading scholars in the area, the four volumes bring together in one ‘mini library’ both classic and contemporary contributions to provide authoritative coverage of the transatlantic slave trade; slavery in Africa and the Indian Ocean region; slave culture; the slave economy; and slave resistance. Other topics include family, gender, and community. The collection also gathers the best and most influential scholarship on attempts to abolish the trade, and the legacy of emancipation.

With a full index, together with a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editors, which places the collected materials in their intellectual context, Slavery is an essential work of reference. The collection will be particularly useful as a database allowing scattered and often inaccessible material to be easily located. It will also be welcomed as a crucial tool permitting rapid access to less familiar—and sometimes overlooked—texts. For scholars and advanced students of Slave Studies, it is a vital one-stop resource.

Volume I: ORIGINS, VARIETIES OF ENSLAVEMENT AND THE SLAVE TRADE
Volume II: MATERIAL CONDITIONS: WORK, DEMOGRAPHY, GENDER, AND FAMILY
Volume III: SLAVE CULTURE, RELIGION, AND RESISTANCE
Volume IV: REVOLUTION, ANTISLAVERY, AND EMANCIPATION

The Cold War dominated international politics between 1945 and 1990, when the two superpowers, the United States and Soviet Union, vied for supremacy. Their clash profoundly influenced the main trends of the time, including economic development, technological change, and decolonization. It divided Europe, with the fault line running through Germany. Although it never erupted into a major superpower conflagration, it was a vicious struggle that was often fought through proxies in the Third World, periodically flared into searing ‘limited’ conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, and occasionally produced the most dangerous international crises, particularly over Berlin and Cuba, which brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.

This new Routledge title is the first reference work authoritatively to draw together all the major works on this pivotal event. The first volume explores how historians and political scientists have approached the Cold War, from the early debates between those who sought to blame one of the two superpowers for starting it, to the findings in the 1990s that were based on newly available sources from the former communist bloc. The volume also makes sense of more recent efforts to examine its global, transnational, and cultural dynamics. The next three volumes are arranged chronologically, dealing in turn with the origins of the Cold War, 1945–53; the oscillating period of crisis and detente between 1953 and 1975; and the end of the Cold War, 1975–90. These three volumes collect a compelling mixture of classic and cutting-edge works. They gathered scholarship explores the story from above and below—from the perspective not just of Washington, Moscow, and Beijing, but also of the smaller players who sought to manipulate the superpowers for their own ends.

- The second and the final part of the series which collects various primary-source materials selected from contemporary publications and historical documents related to the phenomenon of ‘the Yellow Peril’, which contributed to the consolidation of Western consciousness by invoking the menace of an awakening or aggressive Asia—China and Japan in particular—and the consequent decline of the West, racially, culturally, and militarily.

- Following the first series which included facsimile reprints of nine popular works of fiction related to the Yellow Peril, the second series includes a total of forty historical documents, essays, and articles selected from contemporary publications.

- The authors included are not only journalists or diplomats critical to Asian aggressiveness, but also writers like G. K. Chesterton and leading Japanologist scholars like B. H. Chamberlain and E. Bruce Mitford, as well as Kencho Suematz, a Japanese diplomat who corresponded with his Western counterpart.

- Together with Series I, it provides an excellent overview on the cultural and historical relationship between the West and Asia.
